Several athletes from the four athletics club connected to the centre attended the Ballarat Gift on Sunday to compete in the Rod Griffin Handicap 1500m race at City Oval in Ballarat. Despite the heat in Ballarat, the race was thrilling from start to finish with athletes giving it their all.
The winner of the race was Archie Caldow (WEN) who tracked down the whole field to take the victory. After starting last in the timed handicap off 4.05.00 minutes, Archie tracked down the whole field to finish in an incredible time of 4.04.00m!
This capped off an impressive season for Caldow having recently been nominated for the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award at the Ballarat Sportsmen’s Club. The Caldow family continued their streak with brother Axel coming in 2nd the same race! Keen to beat his older brother one day, Axel performed strongly in the back half of the race to finish 2nd. To cap off the podium Tom Lyon (Ballarat Harriers) finished 3rd in a strong performance.
